Kenyatta, Mitumba Lobby Forge New Way to Resume Trade

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 27 – All mitumba importers shall be required to register with Kenya Bureau of Standards as part of measures agreed upon following talks between President Uhuru Kenyatta and the Mitumba Association of Kenya. 

The measures were formulated after the head of State received a petition from the Association, highlighting the challenges they are experiencing as a results of the country’s Covid-19 containment protocols.

Under the new measures, importers will also be required to obtain pre-shipment fumigation certificates in addition to complying with health protocols as directed by the Ministry of Trade, Health, as well as KEBS.

Additionally, importers will also be required to ensure that fumigation is undertaken before baling in compliance with the established standards.

“KEBS and KRA shall also undertake necessary random inspections to ensure compliance with relevant laws and will take action against offenders in accordance with the law.”

Other measures include submitting to the Kenya Revenue Authority a register of their first-tier customers, for ease of contact tracing and tax compliance.

Kenyatta spoke when reiterated the Government’s commitment to continue creating an enabling business environment for enterprises to thrive by eliminating trade barriers.
