Tumblr Will Ban Porn On its Site Starting this Month

Tumblr has made a radical decision on its end user policy where they will ban adult content on its site this month.

The company says that starting December 17th, adult content will not be allowed on the site, regardless of how old you are.

This is a pretty big move by the social network as it has been infamously known for its lax rules around adult content, unlike other social networks.

So what exactly is being banned? Well according to Tumblr, adult content includes “photos, videos or GIFs that show real life human genitals or female presenting nipples, and any content including photos, videos, GIFs and illustrations that depicts sex acts”

Although now adult content won’t be permitted to be published on Tumblr, they have exceptions. Their exceptions include such content as “female presenting nipples in connection with breastfeeding, birth or after-birth moments and health related solutions such as post-mastectomy.

Since there is a lot of adult content on the side already, Tumblr already has a plan for that. They will send out email notices to Tumblr users whose content has been flagged as adult and if it has, you will be reverted to a privacy setting only viewable only to you. However, you can appeal this decision if your content was flagged as adult incorrectly with the form sent via email.

In addition, those people who run blogs with adult content that have been flagged as ‘explicit’ will be overlaid with a content filter and users under the age of 18 will not be allowed to click through such content.

This move comes at a time when Tumblr was removed from Apple’s App Store over child porn. Child porn is a very serious offence and the ramifications go far and wide and that is why Tumblr seems to be cleaning house with such moves.
