A section of farmers in Uasin Gishu county are opting to grow silage targeting dairy farmers owing to unsteady market and prices for maize.

This is part of diversification being employed by the farmers in the area.

Maize prices have reduced to as low as 1,200 shillings per bag in Uasin Gishu county owing to a good harvest experienced this year coupled with imports from a neighboring country that has flooded the market.

Most of them say the price is too low to meet the cost of production hence some are diversifying to other ventures such as fodder.

The farmers say the unsteady price and market for maize coupled with delays by the National Cereals and Produce Board in paying farmers for maize deliveries has also largely contributed to the scaling down of maize farming in favor of alternative income generating ventures.

They are tailoring the silage to nutrient requirements of the market that is currently dominated by dairy farmers.
