– The hosts, through the sports ministry moved in to intervene, footing a night’s bill for the entire team

The Egyptian Sports Minister Ashraf Sobhy came to the rescue of Harambee Stars after he settled the team’s accommodation ahead of Thursday’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers with Egypt in Cairo.

Stars will play Egypt in the opening group G qualifier but Francis Kimanzi’s boys might be forced to look for their own accommodation thereafter.

On Wednesday, November 13, Stars risked being kicked out of their hotel rooms after the Football Kenya Federation over unpaid bills, forcing the hotel management to serve the team with an eviction notice.

The hosts, however, came to the rescue of their opponents with financial aid after Sobhy paid one night’s bill for the entire delegation.

“The stars will have accomodation for tonight courtesy of the Egyptian minister for sports Dr. Ashraf Sobhy who has intervened until after the game tomorrow,” FKF president Nick Mwendwa revealed.

“We however have to pay by that time,” he added.

A defiant further Mwendwa insisted he will continue with his push for better treatment of athletes by the government.

“I said here that the holder of the PS office is not willing to support football and most sports in general,” he said.

“He has money and has decided its better the boys are thrown out of the hotel for us to know who is the boss. Its not right and we shall continue to call this behavior out,” he further submitted.

Stars’ have been drawn alongside Comoros and Togo in Group C.
