The third and final competitive encounter of the African Cup of Nations 2023 Qualifiers is drawing near.
Ivory Coast is slated to host the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, often known as AFCON 2023, which will take place in 2023. The event will be organized a second time by the country that is playing host to it.
In the beginning, it was intended for the contest to take place in the summertime in the northern hemisphere for the third time since the 2019 iteration. This was done to avoid planning problems with European club teams and tournaments.
On July 3, 2022, the CAF made the announcement that the tournament would be postponed until January and February 2024 because of worries over the weather in the host country during the summer months.
There were a total of 48 national teams competing, and they were split up into twelve groups of four teams each, starting with Group A and going all the way down to Group L.
The direct entrants made up 42 of the teams, while the champions of the initial round took home the other six spots.
Before this, the 48 national teams were first drawn into four different pots of 12 depending on the FIFA World Rankings that were published on March 31, 2022.
Ivory Coast, which will host the Africa Cup of Nations in 2023, will compete in the qualifying rounds, but because of their automatic qualification for the championship game, the highest-ranked team in their group that is not Ivory Coast will be the sole side to advance.
The qualifiers of the other nations will be decided based on the outcomes of their encounters against the Ivory Coast.
As a result of their sanctions for “political involvement” in the management of football by FIFA, Kenya and Zimbabwe have been removed from the running to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The CAF had put them in the official draw with the stipulation that the bans must be removed two weeks before the first matchday of each team, but as this did not occur, the two sides would not be able to compete for a position in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Notwithstanding Kenya and Zimbabwe’s exclusion from the competition, the CAF has said that Groups C and K will still be able to produce two teams that meet the qualifying standards.
Once the first two matchdays have concluded, it is time to turn attention to the third matchday, which is scheduled to begin on March 22, 2023.
