Arsenal’s all time goalscorer Thierry Henry has been confirmed as the new boss of MLS side Montreal in a surprise return to football management.

Henry, 42, returns to the dugout for the first time since an underwhelming stint with French side Monaco where he was dismissed in January after 20 games.

The Frenchman has signed a two-year deal with the MLS club, with the option to renew in 2022.

Speaking on his appointment, Henry expressed excitement at managing once again describing the club as one with enormous multicultural heritage.

“It’s an honour to coach the Montreal Impact and return to MLS,” Henry said. “It’s a league I know well, in which I had some very nice moments. To be in Quebec, in Montreal, which has an enormous multicultural heritage, it’s extraordinary. I’ve always kept an eye on the club and now I’m here.”

Montreal also confirmed the appointment through their social media as they described Henry as a proven winner.

“We are extremely happy to announce the nomination of this legend of the game. Henry will bring a new energy to our club. He shares our vision to elevate this club and will help us achieve our goals on and off the field,” Impact president and CEO Kevin Gilmore said in a release.
