Cabinet okays Cholera vaccination exercise targeting 2mn people » Capital News

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 29 – The Cabinet has sanctioned a cholera vaccination exercise targeting 2 million people amid rising cases.

Following a meeting chaired by President William Ruto, the country’s top decision making organ stated that the vaccination will be carried out in Nairobi, Machakos and Garissa.

According to the cabinet memo, these are high risk areas and all Kenyans have been urged to “to continue exercising high hygiene standards as was prescribed at
the height of Covid-19 disease containment measures.”

There has been an increase of cholera infections in the country with eight people dying in a recent outbreak within Nairobi.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with Vibrio cholerae bacteria.

People can get sick when they swallow food or water contaminated with cholera bacteria.

The infection is often mild or without symptoms, but can sometimes be severe and life-threatening.
