The Blues came into the match in better shape than their opponents, having lost just one of their last six league fixtures.

The impressive record saw them dominate the opening exchanges of the meeting, and nearly scored the opener in the sixth minute through Loftus-Cheek who headed wide from Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross.

Mason Mount also went close in the 21st minute with a fierce 25-yard strike which arced towards the top corner to miss the target.

The hosts went on to break the deadlock in the 35th minute through El Ghazi, who fired to the bottom corner to beat Kepa Arrizabalaga who was in goal for Chelsea.

The visitors restored parity via Christian Pulisic in the 60th minute, with the versatile winger capitalising on Azpilicueta’s well swung cross.

Olivier Giroud doubled the advantage just two minutes later, riffling a deflected shot from Azpilicueta’s effort.

A double substitution for Villa that saw Trezeguet and Nakamba did not help much as Frank Lampard’s men held on to cart home all the three points.

The victory leaves the London side sitting fourth on the charts with 51 points, five above fifth-placed Man United.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa face the prospect of being relegated as they occupy 19th place, a point off safety.
