City Market traders ask IG Mutyambai to protect them from hawkers ▷ Kenya News

City Market traders have appealed to Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai to cushion them against hawkers whom they claim are threatening their lives.

The traders led by their chairman Cyrus Kamundia said they have been receiving threats from unknown goons threatening to harm them if they continued pushing for eviction of hawkers from the busy market.

This comes days after stall owners closed their shops on Monday, July 8, to protest the return of hawkers.

According to the OB obtained by one of the traders from Nairobi Central Police Station, the safety of interpreneurs was at stake and needed agent intervention from IG.

‘’We are not safe at all, we have received several threats from unknown people saying that if we won’t retract from pushing hawkers out of this market ,we won’t be alive anymore’’,said Kamundia.

The traders leader argued it was unfair for the stall owners to operate alongside the ‘hawkers’ who don’t pay licence fees to City Hall.

“They only pay KSh 50 to the county while the rest of us pay close to KSh 100,000 annually to cover for licenses, health inspections, electricity bills and other charges,” he added.

Kamundia asked Governor Mike Sonko to allocate an empty piece of land adjacent to city market to hawkers so as to solving the rivalry.

The battle between traders and hawkers began after Sonko allowed the hawkers to carry on with their businesses freely without any restriction.
