Environment and Land Court has summoned Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen for the government’s inability to build toilets along roads for use by travelers, as directed by the court three years ago.
Judge Oguttu Mboya of Nairobi’s Environment and Lands Court asked the Cabinet Secretary to guarantee compliance with the orders imposed on January 16, 2020, and to appear in court on September 20, 2023, to clarify the matter.
The order required the CS to constitute and chair a team that will include representatives from the council of governors (COG), Kenya National Highways Authority, Kenya Rural Roads Authority, and Kenya Urban Roads Authority.
The working group was tasked with developing a strategy for the provision of toilets and other sanitary facilities along roads in order to put the right to a clean and healthy environment along highways into action.
James Macharia was the Cabinet Secretary in charge of transportation and highways at the time.
