Easter tragedy: 13 congregants die as church building collapses ▷ Kenya News

Congregants who had gathered to herald in the Easter weekend were struck by tragedy as the church building housing them collapsed killing 13 of the churchgoers while scores sustained injuries.

The Pentecostal Church in Dlangubo, KwaZulu-Natal had gathered to celebrate Passover when a storm and heavy winds caused the building to collapse on Friday, April 19.

Lennox Mabaso, spokesperson for the provincial Cooperative Governance Department, confirmed the incident and added a total of 29 people were transported to hospital.

“A building that was being used by congregants belonging to the Pentecostal Church collapsed, leaving a total of 13 worshipers reportedly dead,” he said.

Disaster Management Centre officials are expected to accompany Nomusa Dube-Ncube, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, to the site early this morning in an effort to plan support for the affected families.

TUKO.co.ke gathered that surrounding areas on the North Coast had experienced the brunt of the storm, with rescue teams reporting a hectic night.

The rescuers responded to four structural collapses, nine motor vehicle accidents and numerous flooding complaints.

“Residents were left with no electricity, as well as houses and other establishments flooded and personal belongings found up to 200m away from their residence, due to the strong winds” IPSS Medical Rescufour said.
