Governor Awiti Stuns Senators, Presents Letter Written in German to Explain his Health Condition

Homabay Governor Cyprian Awiti has confused Senators after presenting a letter written in German, explaining his health condition and why he has not been able to effectively execute his role as Governor.

Awiti is currently appearing before the Senate to answer audit queries on the rampant corruption and massive theft of funds going on in the county.

Awiti resumed his duties as governor early this month after being out of office for four months due to health reasons. The governor has been battling an eye problem since last year, but now says he has pregained his eyesight and will now be able to carry out his duties without help from his aides.

“I lost my sight but God has given it back to me. I thank everyone who prayed for me,” said Governor Awiti.

He added: “I will not forget what God has done to me. I am now able to see very well and discharge my duties as usual.”

In late June, Awiti was rushed to Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu before being transferred to Nairobi after falling ill during an official event in the county. He fell ill two weeks after he returned to work from a three-month medical leave abroad.

Homabay county has been on the spot for being a hotbed of poor services and is the poster child of how devolution should not work. County officials compete in looting and projects meant to serve county residents are stalled because funds are directed to private pockets.

While appearing before the Senate, Awiti said he was disoriented from discharging his duties as governor and therefore he may not be able to answer to audit questions touching on his county for the 2017/2018 financial year since he has been away on sick leave and has been fighting a court case challenging his re-election

Homa Bay Deputy Governor Hamilton Orata, with the Secretary to the County Isaiah Ogwe, were in charge during Awiti’s absence.
