Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwalecame under heavy criticism over his remarks on Homeboyz FC.

Football stakeholders from the County told Khalwale to stop undermining the club saying it was their only source of pride.

“Kakamega Homeboyz FC has done a lot to nurture talents in this county and beyond. They nearly clinched the Football Kenya Federation premier league title last season and have kick-started their campaigns very well this year,” said the Kakamega County Assembly Deputy Speaker Ben Kerry.

He added, “It is, thus, folly for a leader of Khalwale’s standing to run around funerals while belittling the football club.”

The senator said at a funeral in Ikolomani Constituency on Saturday that Homeboyz FC ‘only benefited two individuals’ and should, thus, stop receiving funding from the Kakamega County Government.

Two individual’s property

He instead urged Governor Fernandes Barasa to cancel a three-year contract between the county government and the Kakamega-based club.

“Kakamega Homeboyz is a property of two individuals, former Governor Wycliffe Oparanya and one Cleophas Toto Shimanyula. It should, thus, stop benefitting from the county government,” Khalwale said.

“I urge Governor Barasa to cancel that contract and start the process of forming a new football team that will be owned by the people of Kakamega,” he added.

But Shimanyula said yesterday that the senator was either acting out of misinformation or jealousy.

“Kakamega Homeboyz is registered as a community and not a corporate football club. We actually entered into a three-year deal with the county government but they only paid us for two months and went underground,” said the businessman who is the club’s founder and Chairman.

He added, “We do not receive any funds from the county government and rely fully on a betting company called Mozzart-bet.”

Shimanyula said the team would not be distracted by the senator’s attacks and was focused on clinching the premier league title this year.
