KMPDU officials found guilty of contempt of court

Two officials from the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) have each been fined Ksh.10,000 after they were found guilty of contempt of court.

If they fail to pay the fine, they are to serve one month community service or custodial sentence.

Dr. Ouma Oluga (KMPDU Secretary General) and Dr. Davji Atella (South Rift branch Secretary)  were found guilty of failing to call off the Laikipia County doctors strike even after the Employment and Labour Relations Court declared it illegal.

Judge Nzioki Makau had directed the union officials to call off the strike and that doctors resume duty.

In his defense, Dr. Oluga told the court that he had no powers to call off the strike as had been ordered as he had no consent from the union members.

He argued before the court that he is a law abiding citizen and a practising physician.

He added that he is a father of a 10-month old baby boy and if sentenced to prison the child would suffer.
