Liverpool have been crowned this year’s UEFA Super Cup winners after stunning rivals, Chelsea, 5-4 in a tense penalty shootout at Istanbul’s Vodafone Arena on Wednesday night, August 14.

The Reds beat Tottenham in Madrid in June to lift the Champions League trophy, while Chelsea defeated Arsenal in the Europa League final in Baku at the end of May to set up an all-Premier League affair in the showpiece clash.

Having suffered a disappointing 4-0 defeat in the hands of Manchester United in their season opener, Chelsea needed to be at their best against the Anfield outfit to get their new campaign back on track.

The continental showpiece therefore saw Frank Lampard name a strong side, with Olivier Giroud starting upfront alongside Christian Pulisic and Pedro.

Giroud went on to score the opener in 36th minute following brilliant foot-work from N’Golo Kante and Pulisic.

Sadio Mane would however equalise just three minutes into the second half, with half-time substitute Roberto Firmino setting up the Senegalese.

The match eventually finished 1-1 after regulation time, but Mane put Liverpool ahead five minutes into extra-time to complete his brace on the night.

But the lead did not last long as Jorginho levelled up affairs from the spot following Adrian’s foul in the dangerous area to send the game to penalties.

Adrian, who stepped in for the injured Alisson Becker redeemed himself in the shootouts, as he saved Tammy Abraham’s decisive penalty to secure a 5-4 shootout victory for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
