The defeat against WestHam early in the season was particularly damning especially after a video emerged of Woodward seemingly having a bitter exchange with Jones.

Naughty Twitter users went to the lengths of suggesting Jones had subtly whispered “sacked in the morning” – when United conceded the first goal.

Woodward however took to diffuse the rumors as he denied even speaking to Jones during the incident.

In an interview with United we Stand, the chair revealed Phil Jones was in fact speaking about some of the decisions which went against them during the match, not Ole Gunnar’s future.

“Phil was talking about whether decisions were offside or not,” Woodward said.

On the question of whether he reprimanded Jones, the United Vice chair said he was actually talking to another person, contrary to what the cameras seemed to show.

“There was a foul and I turned around to Rebecca Britain, our club secretary [and said]: ‘Was that a yellow card on him? [Issa] Diop?”

As reported, the September 22 game ended in a 2-0 defeat and inevitably piled more pressure on the club’s management.

After nine games, United find themselves in an awkward position as they lie 14th in the log, two points off relegation.

The Red Devils will however take away alot of positives from their latest game against Liverpool where they somehow managed to come out with a draw, against the odds.

They travel to Serbia on Thursday, October 24 where they face Partizan in a Europa League clash.
