Parents protest over teachers Ksh.150 demand for CBC brooms

Primary school headteachers have been warned against asking parents Ksh.150 for the CBC assessment.

County Director of Education Joseph Wamocho accused primary school heads of taking advantage of the Grade 3 exercise to solicit for money.

”Children were not supposed to buy the learning aids such as brooms and overalls,” Mr Wamocho said.

He said learning tools that are part of the new Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) have already been catered for by the Education ministry.

The Director noted that he had received complaints from parents saying they were given a list of demands to ostensibly facilitate the CBC assessment.

His sentiments follows demonstrations by parents from Awelo Primary School in Siaya Town.

According to them, the school asked them to pay Ksh. 150 per pupil for the ongoing CBC assessment.

Mr. Wamocho said an investigating team has been dispatched to the affected schools and teachers found imposing charges will face the law.

On of the guidelines from the Kenya National Examinations Council states that pupils will be required to clean a market next to the school compound.

The goal is to help children explore their environment and enjoy learning.
