Police Leave Fred Matiang’i Home After Raila, 200 Lawyers Arrive

Tens of police officers, who surrounded the Karen home of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i have left.

The cops were reportedly under instructions to arrest Matiang’i.

However, the officers abandoned mission after the arrival of Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga and a battery of lawyers led by Danstan Omari.

Speaking to the press, Omari said the officers refused to disclose why they wanted to apprehend his client.

Omari claimed that at least 200 lawyers are with Matiang’i and will spend the night with him to ensure he is not arrested at night.

“I can confirm to every Kenyan in this country that the life of Matiang’i is at risk. We don’t know the intention of wanting to invade Matiang’i’s home at this time of the night. We don’t know why they want to arrest him & where they want to take him to,” Omari said.

For his part, Raila condemned the raid, terming it as impunity of the highest degree and vowed to face the government head-on if it revives Kanu-era tactics to crack down the opposition and critics.

“I was shocked to hear that this was happening at this time of the night. The times of late-night arrests and detentions without any formal charges appear to be coming back.

“If Matinag’i has committed a crime that warrants his arrest, that should be made public and known to him… This idea of arresting senior citizens at this hour of the night is unacceptable,” he said.
