Deputy President William Ruto has convened in Limuru a meeting of all Mt Kenya leaders supporting his 2022 bid. This comes at a time the DP is fast losing his allies in the region as a result of intimidation and most recently the divisive Revenue Bill.
“Alice Wahome has been tasked to coordinate the women leaders wing, while Kimani Ichungwa and Kithure Kindiki will marshal their male colleagues,” says a source privy to the details.
Even though a specific date for the meeting has not yet been set, there are indications Ruto will hold the Limuru caucus towards the end of this meeting after meeting the Nyanza delegations at Sugoi home.
Among key agendas of the meeting are setbacks the Tangatanga camp has experiences in the last several months as well as put down a mechanism to fight the growing opposition to the Deputy President. Former CS Mwangi Kiunjuri is rumored to be on the list of the invited few.
After stamping his authority in both the Senate and National Assembly, President Uhuru Kenyatta embarked on a ruthless purge on DP William Ruto’s allies. This is believed to have sent chills down the spines of Tangatanga leaders in the larger Mt Kenya region making a number of top Ruto crusaders either defect to the Handshake team or avoid the DP Ruto camp completely.
Laikipia Woman Rep Cate Waruguru’s defection has heavily slowed down DP Ruto in Laikipia.
In addition, the revenue allocation bill dented the DP Ruto’s image in the region where most MPs in Tangatanga expected their boss would strongly rally behind a formula that would favor the region. However, as usual DP Ruto is likely to explain himself and assure Mt Kenya of his full backing in the Revenue debate even though his heart is in the opposition.
