Senator Malala elected chair of Senate committee to probe Waiguru

– Waiguru was impeached by 23 out off 33 MCAs on June 9, over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office

– Malala said his team would hand the troubled county boss riddle with corruption allegations a fair hearing that would bring justice to the people of Kirinyaga

– The Kakamega senator said his team would submit its report on whether to uphold the governor’s impeachment or sent her packing by Friday, June 26

Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has been elected the chair of the Senate committee set to probe embattled Governor Anne Waiguru who was impeached on Tuesday, June 9, by the Kirinyaga County Assembly.

Malala was elected unopposed during the committee’s first sitting on Wednesday, June 17, and he would be deputised by Nominated Senator Abshiro Halake who received five votes against Nyandarua’s Mwangi Githiomi who came second with four votes.

The first-term lawmaker said his team would hand the troubled county boss riddle with corruption allegations a fair hearing that would bring justice to the people of Kirinyaga.

“We shall be fair and impartial; we know stakes are high. The whole country is watching us. All parties shall be treated equally,” Malala was quoted by Daily Nation.

Malala said the committee would submit its report on whether to uphold Waiguru’s impeachment or sent her packing by Friday, June 26, as requested by Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka.

The former Devolution CS would only need the support of six out of the 11 senators to retain her plum job.

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen however, claimed a predetermined decision had been made to save the county boss through the committee which he said he alleged had been “fixed”.

“Senate has sanitised and cleared the governor of Kirinyaga. It’s done. Don’t wait for the committee’s decision. To the people of Kirinyaga, I am sorry we did our best but It is finished.Your fight for accountability has been frustrated by Senate, don’t give up use other avenues,” said Murkomen.

The members of the committee include: Abshiro Halakhe (nominated), Michael Mbito (Trans nzoia), Paul Githiomi (Nyandarua), Beth Mugo (nominated) and Anwar Loitiptip (Lamu).

Others are Philip Mpayeeyi (Kajiado), Beatrice Kwamboka (nominated), Stewart Madzayo (Kilifi ),Judith Pareno (nominated) and Moses Kajwang’ (Homa Bay).
