Stop hoarding maize, Trade CS tells farmers

Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has asked farmers who may be hoarding maize to release it in the market between now and Tuesday to prevent importation.

Speaking in Kitale during the burial of journalist Evelyn Ogutu, Kuria said a cabinet meeting scheduled for Tuesday next week will inform the fate of his plan to import maize in the country, and urged farmers to utilize the remaining time to release maize and demonstrate that there is in deed adequate maize stock in the country.

He said his ministry predicts that there will be a shortage of 15 million bags of maize by February next year, hence the need to look for alternative ways of addressing the situation.

Kuria also called for a consultative meeting with millers and the leadership of areas that produce maize in bulk in efforts to iron out issues facing the maize sector.

He at the same time asked leaders to speak the truth and avoid double speak on the genetically modified organisms-GMO maize, saying the government is only keen on ensuring that the country is food sufficient.
