Two families forced to exhume relatives bodies three weeks after burial

Two families in Bondo and Rarieda Constituencies, Siaya County were forced to exhume the bodies of their relatives almost three weeks after burial, after it emerged that there was a mix up at the mortuary.

Residents of Nyawita sub-location in Bondo and Masala sub-location in Rarieda were engulfed in shock as the bodies of the two women were being exhumed concurrently.

The bodies of 100-year-old Leonidah Ogango and 31-year-old Heline Awuor were exhumed under tight security of the police following a court order that was obtained by the family of the granny.

Assistant Chief of Nyawita sub-location Mr. Ayub Ogola, told Citizen Digital that Mrs Ogango’s relatives went and obtained the court order after discovering that they had buried a different person.

He stated that residents of Nyawita sub-location thought they had buried the body of the 100-year-old Leonidah Ogango yet it was that of 31-year-old Heline Awuor who was supposed to be buried in Rarieda.

According to the assistant chief, the mix-up of the bodies of Leonidah and Helida Awuor occurred at the Lwak Mission Hospital Mortuary in Rarieda sub-county where the two bodies were all returned for re-identification and eventual release to their rightful places of burial.

Mr. Ogola, who confirmed the exercise that took about four hours, stated that the exhumation of the bodies, re-identification and reburials were all done on Saturday night.
