Tycoon buried in a bizarre ceremony : The Standard

Published

on

Business mogul Wilfred Murungi (pictured) was yesterday buried in a strictly private ceremony attended by only a handful of close relatives.
Attendance of the burial of the founder and chairman of Mastermind Tobacco Kenya Limited was by invitation only. So guarded was the ceremony that some relatives who had not been invited for the burial were turned away.
Due to his immense wealth, many had expected a colourful send-off for a man who played in the league of British tobacco companies and almost conquered them. But they were disappointed.
One of his nephews who drove his mother to the burial was turned away at the gate with only the elderly woman being allowed in.
According to a relative who declined to be named, only 20 people were expected at the brief ceremony and that was the exact number of chairs that were arranged at the tent where the ceremony took place.
Outnumbered mourners
Sources told The Standard police officers who had been deployed to provide security in the compound and enforce the privacy orders outnumbered the mourners.
Apart from the choppers that flew in his body and ferried close family members and the hearse, nothing would have betrayed the ceremony to be that of a billionaire who earned his place at the high table of power and wealth in the 1990s.
For a man known for his philanthropy back at his home area in Maara Constituency, his insistence on a strictly private burial left many tongues wagging.
An obituary in the dailies indicated that a memorial service would be held at the All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi tomorrow- two days after his private burial at his Magutuni home, and next to his wife who died in 2010.
His body was flown to Kiurani Primary School in a chopper that touched down at 11.07am. A second one carrying his four children- Audrey, Angela, Alan and Eric, following closely.
In 2010, his wife’s body was also flown in to the same school for a burial that was supposed to be attended by 40 people only.
Wife’s burial
Murungi did not attend his wife’s burial, with some relatives claiming it was out of respect for her wishes. Instead, he escorted the body from Nairobi, handed it over to the children and left.
Yesterday, residents expressed their disappointment at being locked out of the burial of a man they described as generous to a fault.
“It is unfortunate that we did not get a chance to appreciate his generosity with a good send-off that he deserved. We were told he decided to make it a private family affair,” said Nancy Kainyu, a resident.
Members of the Arua clan, to which Murungi belonged, expressed their disappointment after being denied a chance to bury one of their own.
A local administrator intimated to The Standard that no one was allowed close to the casket carrying Murungi’s body on its arrival at the school grounds.
Even the few men hired earlier to dig his grave were turned away at the gate during his burial.
Journalists were not even allowed anywhere near the gate.
There were no photographers, no printed eulogies, not even meals during the event that took one hour before his family quickly boarded the two choppers and left.
They left behind a host of disappointed people, including businessmen from Magutuni town, who had expected to make a kill from mourners.
BAT engineer
Murungi first worked as an engineer with the British American Tobacco before quitting to set up Mastermind Tobacco in the late 1980s – first in Nakuru and then, when the business did well, in Nairobi.
He survived intense battles from his competitors in the tobacco industry, and the Government, which demanded millions in taxes.
After starting the company, Murungi became a recluse. Many in his home area rarely saw him at his palatial homes in Magutuni and Mwiria in Maara sub-county.
The homes are so heavily guarded that visitors have to pass through four gates to reach the homestead.
Still, behind the gates, Murungi actively participated in charity work, albeit through proxies.
Offered to tarmac
At one time, he is said to have offered to tarmac Keria-Magutuni and Katharaka Ikumbo roads. The story goes that the offer was turned down by a local politician who feared the millionaire was plotting a political entrance.
He treated the nearby Kiurani Secondary School as his pet project, buying the students their first school bus and sponsoring the construction of a multipurpose hall named after him.

They Didn’t Look For Votes On My Behalf, I Went Looking For My Votes, President Kenyatta Tells Off ‘Allies’ –

Published

on

Kenya could be in for a changing political landscape and a major crack in Jubilee, after President Uhuru Kenyatta openly told off those politicking about 2022.

Speaking during the 2019 Akorino Annual conference, President Kenyatta seemingly sending a coded message switched to Kikuyu language, accusing some politicians of ‘giving him headache’ for politicking about 2022.

“These thugs that we elected are busy politicking. They should not think I am their boy, they will not stop me from constructing roads. They didn’t look for votes on my behalf. I went looking for my votes. These rubbish should stop bothering me,” said Kenyatta.

Kenyatta added that he had chosen to refrain from newspapers and social media since they were saturated with politics.

“When they see me remain silent, they should not think they are threatening me. I will flush them out from where they are… Just because you are making headlines, don’t think you will bother me. And that is why I stopped concentrating on newspapers or those Facebooks of theirs,” he added.

The President seemingly did not spare his deputy William Ruto who was present, attacking his political faction dubbed Tanga tanga, for politicking about 2022.

“If you are an elected leader go to the grassroots construct schools, install electricity for your people stop going round telling us how you shall rise to power. You will not go anywhere without these people,” said Mr Kenyatta.

There have been major divisions at the ruling Jubilee Party, with one faction dubbed Kieleweke accusing Ruto led wing, Tanga Tanga, of advancing 2022 agenda when the time is yet.

Hunter hunted as former prosecutor fined Sh200,000 for bribery : The Standard

Published

An Eldoret court has fined a prosecutor based in Kitale Sh200,000 after he was found guilty of soliciting bribes.

Eldoret Chief Magistrate Charles Obulutsa ruled that James Naburuk Sichangi will serve two years in jail in default for two counts of receiving bribe contrary to Ethics and Economic Crime Act.
Obulutsa said although the accused was the first offender, his action exposed the National police and the office of Director of Public Prosecutor to public ridicule and contempt.
According to charge sheet the accused, who was working as a court prosecutor at Kitale law court on November 15 2014, solicited for a bribe of Sh60,000 from Ms Joyce Wanjiku as an inducement to support a bail application by Wanjiku’s employee Fred Wabuoba who was charged in a Kitale court.

The accused was initially charged with five counts of corruption by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
The complainant reported the matter to the offices of EACC in Eldoret where she was given a recorder and Sh60, 000 marked money which was given to the accused as a bribe.
The charge sheet further stated that the accused was recorded asking for the money.
He received the treated money on November 13 at the Kitale law court where he was immediately arrested by EACC detectives.

International’ premieres in Kenya – Nairobi News

Published

on

Men In Black: International is the fourth entry in the sci-fi saga and comes seven years after MIB 3 and a quarter of a century since Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith first introduced audiences to the top-secret agency.

Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth take over from “MI3” which ended with a clear finale for its two central characters and that is why the characters were not featured in the latest installation.

Agent H and Agent M, this time around, are spearheading the London bureau’s precarious mission to protect the Earth from an alien species.

Compared to the three previous films, Men In Black: International, is in a way very predictable, yet still mildly funny.

ALIENS ON EARTH

Thompson and Hemsworth are the dynamic duo who make the film better. The two agents employ high-tech weaponry to battle mischievous aliens on Earth.

However, the pair also discover a major threat within their own ranks. The new MIB agents are no longer protecting Earth from the scum of the universe as we learn from the onset of the movie.

Thompson’s performance as an unprincipled, quick-witted and is one of the standouts of the film and she sparks in her character.

COMIC RELIEF

Apart from the two, the film offers some comic relief in the form of alien Pawny, itty-bitty voiced by Kumail Nanjiani, who brings a lot of life into the small little alien.

While the trailer only shows a joke or two, Pawny plays such a big role in the film. Pawny is the film’s comedy MVP.

The film also stars Liam Neeson, Rebecca Ferguson, Rafe Spall, Laurent Bourgeois, and Larry Bourgeois.

It premiered in Nairobi on Wednesday at an invite only event at Anga Imax courtesy of BuzzKenya. Movie goers can also purchase tickets at the site.
