President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced that the cost of electricity will reduce by 15 per cent, by the end of this month.

Speaking on Sunday during this year’s Jamhuri Day Celebrations at Nairobi’s Uhuru Gardens on Sunday, 12th December, the President said the deduction will be carried out in two phases, the first one will be reflected in December and the final one in April 2022.

“I am pleased to declare openly to the nation that the release of the cost of electricity will be implemented in two tranches of 15 per cent each; with the first 15 per cent achieved through initial actions focusing on system and commercial losses, to be reflected in the December bills, and a further 15 per cent reduction, in the first quarter of 2022,” he said.

The announcement comes after President Kenyatta ordered the Ministry of Energy to start executing the over 30 per cent decrease pledge he made in October after receiving the Presidential Taskforce on Power Purchase Agreements.

The task force was formed in March to address the cost of electricity, as well as streamline and strengthen the business, and the sector.

“I note that the Ministry of Energy has initiated engagements with independent power producers (IPPs) aimed at renegotiation of power purchase agreements (PPAs), so as to give better value for money for consumers.”

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) is likely to publish revised electricity tariffs to reflect the decreased electricity costs following the president’s directive.

At the moment, a unit of power (1 kWh) costs Ksh25.33 for the average household user.
