Former President Uhuru Kenyatta submitted a resignation letter dated October 5, 2026, announcing his immediate departure from the chair of the Azimio La Umoja coalition, now rebranded as The Ukombozi Alliance, following the handover of Jubilee Party leadership to former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, Kalonzo Musyoka, leader of the Wiper Patriotic Front and Party Leader of The Ukombozi Alliance, thanked Uhuru for his service and asserted that the resignation does not create a leadership vacuum, nor does it alter the coalition’s leadership, direction or programme.
Musyoka clarified that the positions of Party Leader and Chair of Council are separate, noting that the chair provides counsel, convening and guidance, while the Party Leader is the political and executive head, responsible for day-to-day affairs, representing the party before the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties and answering to its members.
He confirmed that the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties has reserved the name The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA) for the coalition, resolving a prior naming challenge, and said the alliance is now completing the remaining compliance requirements.
Musyoka announced that Uhuru will be invited for an official visit during which a formal handover ceremony will be conducted, and reiterated that the former president remains a committed member of the coalition and will continue to offer counsel when called upon.
The coalition’s rebranding from Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya Coalition Party to The Ukombozi Alliance took place in September, and Musyoka urged members, supporters and partners to stay united as the alliance prepares for the 2027 General Election.
In his resignation letter, Uhuru described the step as part of institutional renewal rather than abandonment, characterising the coalition as a permanent covenant of conviction rather than a temporary alliance of convenience.
