Kenya is being urged to prepare for above-average rainfall between October and December 2026, with the Kenya Meteorological Department warning that El Niño conditions could persist into early 2027.
The weather agency issued the warning as attention turns to the upcoming October-November-December (OND) rainfall season.
The forecast has prompted calls for households, farmers and government agencies to prepare for the possibility of flooding, landslides and other weather-related disruptions.
Counties Asked to Prepare Early
The Meteorological Department has urged national and county governments to use the forecast in their planning, particularly in areas that are vulnerable to flooding and other climate-related hazards.
Heavy rainfall can disrupt transport, damage roads and bridges, affect agriculture and increase the risk of waterborne diseases.
Farmers have also been encouraged to use the forecast when making decisions on planting and other agricultural activities.
Kenya experienced one of its most severe El Niño episodes in 1997, when prolonged heavy rains caused widespread destruction to crops, homes and infrastructure.
The latest warning comes as the government continues strengthening preparedness for extreme weather, including efforts to improve early warning systems and disaster response.
Authorities have also been advised to discourage the public from relying on unverified weather information, particularly on social media, and instead follow updates from the Meteorological Department and other official agencies.
With the rainy season still ahead, early preparation could help reduce the impact on communities, businesses and critical infrastructure.
