Kenyan political exile Miguna Miguna has been elected the president of Karen Residents Association beating Raila

Miguna Miguna was elected by the majority beating top contestants including Raila  and other top officials.

Karen Residents Association is a community of wealthy residents who reside in Karen and are permanent members in the area.

Its members conduct elections after every 2 years.

Miguna Miguna, a 58-year-old Kenyan-Canadian lawyer, was deported by Nairobi on 26 March, 2018, just two months after he and other lawyers swore in opposition leader Raila Odinga as the “People’s President” following the two 2017 presidential elections.

This is Miguna’s second exile. He fled the country in 1987 after being detained for his activities as a student leader.

Miguna and Odinga have had a fraught relationship. They fell out midway into the 2008-2012 term, and Miguna went on to write memoirs about his time working for Odinga.

Dr Miguna has been trying to return since January 7 but has encountered challenges including a red alert issued by the government, preventing him from flying to Kenya or any other African country.

The lawyer says accommodation, meals, travel and communication in European cities, where he got stuck recently, have set him back over Sh3 million.

In an exclusive email interview with the Nation, he said his trips around Europe, as he looked for an alternative route to land in Nairobi, “drained me financially”.

He cited Berlin, where he got stuck after Lufthansa Airlines refused to let him board a flight, saying life was very expensive in the German capital.

The subject of Miguna’s citizenship first came up in 2010; Kenyan law at the time did not recognize dual citizenship, and President Kibaki’s supporters insisted he needed a work permit to work in the country.
