Ministry of Youth Affairs Suspends 2026 National Youth Council Elections After High Court Order

The Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports announced on Thursday, October 8 that the 2026 National Youth Council elections have been suspended following a High Court order staying Gazette Notice No. 10421.

The High Court in Kiambu issued the order that halts the implementation of the notice which had set the election timetable in three phases – ward-level voting on October 9, constituency-level voting on October 16 and the national congress on October 30.

In a statement the ministry said it had been served with the court order and would comply, adding that the elections will not proceed on the previously gazetted dates pending further directions or determination by the court.

The ministry also affirmed that voter-education and public-sensitisation activities will continue while the matter is before the court, urging registered voters, aspirants, youth stakeholders and partners to rely on official communications for updates.

The National Youth Council, a state corporation created under the National Youth Council Act No. 10 of 2009, has never held elections since its inception, with previous attempts delayed by underfunding and a series of legal challenges; the October timetable was intended to end a 14-year wait for elected youth representatives.
