The political temperature surrounding the upcoming Ol Kalou by-election has risen after former Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria publicly declared his support for Murang'a Governor Irungu Kang'ata, describing him as one of the emerging leaders in the Mt Kenya region.

In a statement shared on social media ahead of the Linda Mwananchi rally in Nyahururu, Kuria revealed that he had personally called Kang'ata to express his solidarity.

He also urged leaders to protect democratic space, saying political competition should not be stifled by any individual or group.

The former Cabinet Secretary went further, claiming that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was uncomfortable with the emergence of alternative leaders in the Mt Kenya region, particularly younger politicians and leaders from Murang'a County.

While these remarks reflect Kuria's political opinion, they add to the growing rivalry that has defined the contest ahead of the mini poll.

The Ol Kalou by-election has increasingly become more than a race to replace a Member of Parliament.

Political analysts view it as a test of influence among competing factions seeking to shape Mt Kenya politics ahead of the 2027 General Election.

As campaigns gather momentum, all eyes will be on Ol Kalou to see whether the by-election reshapes political alliances in the region or reinforces existing power blocs.
