Prominent Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, have died in a helicopter crash that killed all six people on board.
The private helicopter crashed on Wednesday, September 30, near Marondera, about 70 kilometres southeast of Zimbabwe’s capital Harare, after the couple had visited Chivayo’s rural home area in Gandami.
Zimbabwean authorities said the aircraft went down at around 5pm local time near Waddilove Mission, with no survivors.
Chivayo’s family later confirmed that he and his wife were among those killed. Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa also confirmed Chivayo’s death on Thursday.
Cause of Crash Under Investigation
The Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe has opened an investigation into the accident.
Preliminary information indicates the helicopter’s tail may have struck the ground first before fuel spilled and ignited, but authorities have stressed that the exact cause of the crash has not yet been established.
Investigators are examining the wreckage and other evidence from the crash site as they work to determine what happened.
Chivayo was one of Zimbabwe’s most visible businessmen and was associated with Intratrek Zimbabwe, which has been involved in energy and infrastructure projects.
He was also known for his highly publicised lifestyle and for giving expensive vehicles and cash gifts to musicians, religious leaders, sports personalities and other public figures. His business dealings and government contracts had also attracted public scrutiny over the years.
Ruto Mourns Chivayo
President William Ruto was among African leaders who publicly mourned Chivayo on Thursday.
Ruto described him as a close friend and said he would remember him for his friendship, energy and belief in Africa’s potential.
The two had been seen together publicly on several occasions. Chivayo had recently visited Kenya and attended a family event connected to President Ruto in Narok County.
Ruto also extended condolences to President Mnangagwa, the families of the other victims and the people of Zimbabwe.
Chivayo had built a wide public profile beyond Zimbabwe through his business interests, philanthropy and relationships with prominent figures across Africa.
Authorities are expected to release further information once investigations establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
