Munya orders lifestyle audit on KeBS staff

A lifestyle audit for all Kenya Bureau of Standards and the Anti Counterfeit Authority employees is expected to kick off next week.

Industry and Trade Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya has said the lifestyle audit will be carried out by officials from his ministry and the Kenya National Standards Council.

Another team will be set up to assess employees of the anti counterfeit agency in an exercise to rein in on corrupt officers.

It is estimated that, counterfeits cost the Kenyan economy more than 200 billion shillings annually.

Trade Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya says the lifestyle audit is expected to rid KEBS and the Anti-Counterfeit Agency rogue employees who have been accused by manufacturers of colluding with wayward business people to ship in and manufacture fake products.

Munya has further said a multi-agency team comprising of the Anti-Counterfeit Agency, the Kenya Bureau of Standards, Directorate of Criminal Investigation, the National Police Service and the Kenya Revenue Authority, is making inroads in the fight against illicit trade.

Next week leaders of small and medium enterprises from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania are expected to meet in Eldoret for the annual regional SME trade fair.

The trade fair brings together more than 1,500 traders from the region to showcase their tools.
