The impeachment of Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu’s close ally as a minister spells doom for the governor who is fighting orders barring him from accessing office until the corruption case against him is concluded.

Nyoro

Acting governor James Nyoro is out to consolidate his powers by removing pro-Waititu faces in the county with full blessing of powerful forces opposed to deputy president William Ruto succeeding president Uhuru Kenyatta. Nyoro has been spotted at State House on several occasions. He at one time worked as an advisor to Uhuru. On the other hand,Waititu has been blocked from State House and even reaching Uhuru on phone.

Last week, 53 of the county’s 55 MCAs passed the motion to impeach Youth and Sports Executive Karungo Thangw’a on grounds that he undermined acting governor Nyoro.

Nominated MCA Njeri Bakari, in her motion, argued that Thang’wa had undermined the acting county boss by not attending cabinet meetings, hence leading to his department not receiving any allocation.

Ndichu

Thang’wa’s woes began early, in July 2019, after a special committee was set up to investigate his office.

The committee found that the youth division splashed Sh1.9 million on the tournament that took place on April 1, 2019.

“The executive launched a driving school programme two years ago where 1,200 youths were trained but have never been awarded driving licences despite the driving school being paid,” argued Kinoo MCA Kimani Wanjiku.

The impeachment came as Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji told a court he has lined up 68 witnesses who are ready to testify against the governor together with his co-accused.

Also on the spot is the Speaker Stephen Ndichu, another close ally of the embattled governor.

Already, 60 MCAs have signed a petition of a vote of no confidence against the speaker and his deputy Philip Mubea (Cianda MCA), who are Waititu’s close allies.

The MCA two months ago ejected Waititu’s allies who included majority leader Anthony Ikonya (Kiambu Township) and his deputy Alex Kabuu (Kiganjo).

Others were chief whip James Mburu (Mwiki) and his deputy Margaret Gatonye.

For Ndichu, the MCAs are digging deep into his conduct over a trip he had taken to China.

Ndichu allegedly received more than Sh300,000 dishonestly. He is accused of incurring expenses by false pretences, causing the assembly to lose millions.

Majority Leader and Ndeiya MCA Gideon Gachara, who is a fierce critic of the Speaker, has sworn to have him ousted.
