Nyandarua County government has signed a deal with German-based agricultural solutions organizations- BASF and IPR to establish a one billion shillings food processing plant that will also house a cold storage warehouse.
Nyandarua Governor Francis Kimemia says the cold storage facility would go a long way in reducing post harvest losses while the processing plant would add value to agricultural produce from the area such as Irish potatoes, fruits and vegetables.
Even though Nyandarua County is among areas with high Irish potato production, nearly half of the produce goes to waste due to poor handling after harvest and inadequate processing facilities.
The cold storage warehouse is expected to prolong the shelf life of potatoes and other highly perishable farm produce, among them vegetables and fruits.
