Bullish KCB RFC wants nothing but the title

KCB RFC head coach Dennis Mwanja is targeting to win the National Sevens Circuit this year as it kicks off with the Kakamega Sevens leg this weekend at the Kakamega Bull Ring.

The bankers finished third last year with 94 points, 28 points adrift of champions Menengai Cream Homeboyz and the former Shujaa skipper believes that with the reduction of the mistakes they made last year in the main cup semi-finals will hand his charges their third title.

“We’re looking at improving from last year where we were losing at the semi-finals of the main cup from simple mistakes, so this year we’re looking at reducing the mistakes and managing the game. We’re looking beyond the officiating and any other obstructions,” he charged.

In Kakamega they’ll face one half of the hosts Kabras Sugar, Kisii Rfc and University side Masinde Muliro and Mwanja is confident of topping the pool.

“They’re strong sides but until that day reaches we’re confident of ourselves,’’ he said, upbeat of his team’s chances.

KCB has confirmed the acquisition of four players, fly-half Johnstone Olindi from Homeboyz and forward Shadon Munoko from varsity side Mean Machine who both featured for Shujaa during the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

The others are fly-half Levy Amunga from Blaq Blad and Patrick Ouko from Homeboyz.

“We need the youth in our team who will bring the drive and the anger to win and write their own story,” he said.  “With a club with most players who’re used to winning, it’s good to give them motivation by bringing other players who will motivate them to renew their winning mentality.”

Mwanja has two injury concerns which includesflanker Andrew Amonde (knee injury) and skipper Jacob Ojee (hand injury).

“We’re still monitoring them but we might miss the services of Amonde but for Ojee we’ve got to wait for the doctor to give us the final report after the assessment.”

The bankers will be searching for their third title after lifting the maiden in 2013 and 2014.
