Over 30,000 new and duplicate Identity cards, some dating back to 2012, remain uncollected in Kiambu county, County registrar of persons John Njuguna has said.
According to Njuguna, as at March this year, there were over 31,978 uncollected IDs, among them 10, 526 new applications and 21,452 duplicates.
He explained that the reason for uncollected cards could be that some applicants moved to different counties and applied afresh, while others could have traced their lost IDS after they had applied for duplicates.
However, Njuguna disclosed that who had applied for IDs should pick them from their nearby county and sub county registration offices, adding that Once an ID card is reported missing, the serial number is invalidated upon reapplication and a new serial number issued.
This therefore means you cannot use the old ID, even if found, hence it becomes important to collect the resultant duplicate, he added.
“During the recent voter registration exercise, we managed to distribute a number of cards to residents through their respective chiefs. This was necessitated by the fact that people needed them in order to register as voters,” Njuguna said.
Meanwhile, foreigners seeking to acquire a Kenyan identity card, must produce a certificate of registration as a Kenyan, signed and approved by the CS, Ministry of Interior and Coordination of Nation Government.
