Huawei Mate 30 PRO features World’s Most Sophisticated Cameras

When the Mate 20 Series launched last year, my article was titled Huawei Mate 20 Pro: Make Smartphones Exciting Again. The phone came at a time when everything seemed the same – every new phone launched was doing the same thing. Huawei made things exciting again. And this year, they’re going in much harder than before.

Like last year’s Mate 20 Pro, the new Mate 30 Pro is bringing new features never seen before on any smartphone. But before we talk about that, let’s address an issue that has been the talk of tech throughout the year: Huawei Ban.

With Trump banning Huawei from doing business with American companies, the new phones don’t come with Google Services Pre-installed. Many Western Media want to make it feel like it’s an impossible thing to have an Android Phone without Google Services. It isn’t. For some people, it is actually a great thing. But like we’ve already discussed many times, you can still install your Google Apps after getting the phone. So, it’s a non-issue.

Huawei has announced it is investing $1 Billion to develop its own app ecosystem with Huawei Mobile Services Core which the company says is already integrated to over 45,000 apps. So on your new Mate 30 Series, you’ll be getting Huawei’s App Gallery as your App Store. But it’s more than an app store; you’ll sync your stuff, backup photos, and much more.

The new phones Huawei has announced today:

  • Huawei Mate 30
  • Huawei Mate 30 Pro
  • Huawei Mate 30 RS (Porsche Design)

Mate 30 Pro:

The highlight of the launch, as usual, is the Pro phone which comes with the world’s most advanced camera system.

There’s a quad camera setup. Here’s the breakdown of all the lenses present:

Huawei Mate 30 PRO features World's Most Sophisticated Cameras
  • a 40MP Ultra-wide Cine Camera
  • a 40MP SuperSensing Wide Camera
  • an 8MP Telephoto (with OIS)
  • a 3D depth sensing lens

If that doesn’t impress you, this will:

  • While Standard ISO on many phones is at 6400, Huawei’s pushing this to 409600!
  • Both Tele and Wide cameras have Optical Image Stabilization
  • Both 40MP lenses can access the 3D depth sensor for live bokeh even when shooting videos
  • You can shoot 4K video at 60fps. Wait. You can shoot 1080p video at 960fps. Just wait. You can shoot 720p video at 7,680fps!!! Mind-blowing!
  • When shooting video in low-light, you can go as high as ISO 52,000!

No other phone can boast of such an impressive camera system. It is crazy how far Huawei is pushing innovation! But it’s not just the back cameras that are exciting. The front camera system is also doing new things.

There’s a 32MP selfie camera which is included with Huawei’s new 3D scanning hardware. Before Google can bring its SOLI Chip with the Pixel 4, Huawei has included a dedicated sensor to recognize hand gestures, which works in conjunction with their in-house Da Vinci NPU. You can using gestures interact with the phone without having to touch it.

Apart from cameras, Huawei is also pushing a couple of new, and improved features:

  • The new Kirin 990 is the world’s first SoC with 5G modem built in.
  • The new Horizon Display extends from side to side. So there’s no physical buttons. Only virtual ones.
  • You can use an M-Pen stylus with the phone. The stylus supports up to 4096 levels of pressure.
  • The 4500mAh battery can be fast charged wirelessly and wired: 27W wirelessly (a world’s first), and 40W wired, like last year.
  • The 5G variant supports EIGHT 5G bands. In compsrion, the Note 10 supports only 3.

Mate 30:

The Mate 30 is also pretty impressive. Here’s the specs of the Mate 30 cameras:

The Mate 30 this year is not that much of a downgrade from the Pro model like with last year’s model. It is an incredible phone for its price. Check the specs down below.

Availability in Kenya:

Huawei has confirmed these phones will be available in the market later on this year. Though dates haven’t been confirmed. The company is still gearing up to bring the new Huawei P30 Lite locally, and for the first time to launch the Nova series in the market.
