Kenya’s Inflation Declines to 4.59% in June

Kenya’s inflation in June dropped to 4.59% year on year, from 5.5% recorded in May. That was the lowest rate since September 2019, and was occasioned by a reduction in food prices. 

According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, on a monthly basis, inflation was -0.31% from 0.63% in May.

The food and non-alcoholic drinks index decreased by 1.27% between May and June 2020, compared to a decrease of 0.24% in May 2020.

The housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels index dropped by 0.81% occasioned by lower kerosene costs which decreased by KSh21.33 during the mid-month review.

The prices of tomatoes, Irish potatoes, cabbages, oranges and wheat flour decreased by 12.16%, 5.05%, 4.84% and 4.00%, respectively.

Housing & utilities decreased by 1.4% from 2.6% in May while alcoholic beverages & tobacco decreased by 6.8% from 8% in May.

On the other hand, the prices of onions, sukuma wiki, and spinach increased by 3.51%, 4.67%, and 2.61%, respectively.

The rate edged higher mostly in the transport sector (6.9% vs 5.2% in May) and recreation & culture (3% vs 1.5%).

The bus/matatu fares rose by 50.6% during the month. Cooking gas went up by 1.5%.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) decreased by 0.31% to 108.27, from 108.60 in May.
