MPs Suspend Gov’t Plans to Limit Age of Imported Used Cars

Members of Parliament have thwarted the plans to implement a policy seeking to limit the age of imported used cars in the country

The parliamentary committee on Trade said that the policy has no legal backing and therefore, it should be suspended.

The proposed National Automotive Policy seeks to reduce the age of imported second-hand cars from the current eight years to five years, and by 2021, the government hopes to cap the age limit to 3-years by 2021 before eventually phasing off the imports.

The directives, contained in the Draft National Automotive Policy, which was set to be implemented in June 2019 targeted those above 1,500cc.
The committee said that car dealers can freely import the cars until the policy by the government goes through the public participation and approval by the House.
