Kilifi governor Amason Kingi has reportedly settled on his younger brother Michael as his preferred successor in 2022 general elections.

The governor’s sibling who is also member of parliament for Magarini was already going round the county creating networks which he would later on activate for his campaigns.

The governor is serving his second and final constitutional term. Initially, the governor created an impression that he did not have a preferred successor leaving his supporters to engage in speculations.

However, sources close to the governor have now revealed that he discreetly working behind the scenes to ensure he is succeeded by his own brother.

To perhaps ensure his strategy is kept under wraps to avoid a backlash from other aspirants angling for his endorsement, the governor was making it look like he is against the candidature of Michael.

But family sources say, meetings have been held and a decision already made in regard to Michael contesting the governorship. He will be financed by the governor and also inherit his political networks. The unresolved headache, is only who to become Michael’s running mate.

Lands chief administrative secretary Gedion Mung’aro whom many think is destined to benefit from Kingi’s endorsement by virtue of the fact he was instrumental in the election of the governor in 2013 general elections is reportedly being played and would be dumped at an appropriate time

Mung’aro and Kingi fellout towards the 2017 general elections when they competed against each other for the governor seat with the former in Jubilee and the latter in ODM parties respectively.

However, after the elections, the duo buried their political differences and are currently close, a move that had raised speculations of a political deal.

However, Mung’aro told close friends recently that when he meets the governor who is also his relative, they discuss general issues pertaining to the welfare of Kilifi residents and that they don’t discuss county succession politics.

In 2013 general elections, Mung’aro’s political star was higher than Kingi’s but he was forced to forgo the governor in the latter’s favour.
