Perennial fires at the famous Gikomba Market in Nairobi continues leave traders with huge losses. Traders at the famous thrift market are now counting another loss after a fire razed their shoes stores at around 3am on Wednesday.
According to traders the fires was contained after razing more than 100 stores in the market.
‘‘I heard screams from the market side at around 3am when I rushed there the first stall was on fire,we tried what we could but the fire was really huge,it spread to others stalls quickly before the fire brigades arrived.’’ Ndolo one of the traders told Ghetto Radio News.
The traders are now calling on the county government of Nairobi to set a fire station in the area to ensure future fire out breaks are contained on time.
‘’County government should set up a fire station at Gikomba because we are tired of these fires every now and then,it will help in putting the fire off on time.’’ Ndolo added.
Some traders however, blamed cartels operating at the markets saying some are ‘big’ businessmen who take huge loans and after spending the sums they intentionally burns the property for protections.
This is the fourth fire in a period of two years.
Meanwhile the county government of Nairobi has not issued any official statement on the same.
