Activist Boniface Mwangi’s ‘Softie’ Film Nominated For 2021 Emmy Awards

Kenyan political activist Boniface Mwangi has a reason to smile after POV, an American Public Broadcasting Service, announced the nomination of his film, Softie, for the 2021 Emmy Awards. 

Boniface’s was among 52 other documentaries selected for the Outstanding Politics and Government Documentary feature category. This comes after the film recently won the Willy Brandt Documentary Award for Freedom and Human Rights at the Human Rights Film Festival in Berlin.

The film highlights the story of his years as an activist and the effect on his life and family. 

Softie, written and directed by Sam Soko, first premiered at the Sundance in January 2020, and has won several awards. They include the special jury honour for editing at Sundance and the Best Documentary at Dubai International Film Festival 2020.

In October 2020, Kenyans got to watch the political activist’s journey through the 2017 elections period when it was aired in movie theatres across several counties.

Boniface has always publicly acknowledged his wife Njeri Mwangi’s solid support in his career. The couple are blessed with three children.
