Harambee Stars' 3-0 defeat to Senegal in their last Africa Cup of Nations Group C clash dented the team's chances of progressing to the next round of the competition.

Kenya finished third in the group with three points, with their only victory of the tournament coming against neighbours Tanzania.

The win revived Stars' chances of turning around their fortunes, having lost 2-0 to Algeria in their group opener.

The Sebastien Migne-tutored side therefore had everything to play for against Senegal, with a win the only sure guarantee for passage to the next round.

The team however went on to suffer a heartbreaking 3-0 defeat to the Lions of Teranga, thanks to Sadio Mane's second-half strike and Ismaila Sarr's thunderbolt.

With a third place finish in the group, the loss leaves qualification in the tournament out of Stars' hands and having to rely on results in Tuesday's, July 2, Group E and F matches.

The top two teams from each group (A-F) will earn automatic qualification to the last 16, with the four best third-placed teams in the six groups also progressing.

Dropping to the final berth in the best losers category with three points, Kenya will need a number of results to go their way in final round of group matches.

In Group F for instance, Ghana, who sit second with two points will need to beat or draw with Guinea-Bissau while Cameroon must, ideally, beat Benin.

In Group E, Tunisia and Mali will have to preferably beat Mauritania and Angola, respectively.

However, should Mauritania and Angola win Kenya will be eliminated, regardless.

Also, should Mauritania win and Angola draw, Stars will also be be dumped out, nevertheless.

Meanwhile, Kenya face the prospect of playing hosts Egypt should they make it through to next round.
