Athletics Kenya (AK) wants the government to join in them in the fight against doping by criminalising the vice.
Kenya is currently ranked third on the list of countries with high doping cases and the rate of cases is alarmingly on the rise.
AK president Jack Tuwei has reached out to Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed to convince the government to enforce anti-doping laws that would see offenders serve a jail term.
“We are appealing to you to help us in the government procedures to ensure that doping is criminalised in order to end this menace,” said Tuwei.
In her response, Amina promised to rally her cabinet colleagues to push Parliament to pass laws criminalising doping.
"Doping will be minimal, we need put it to the bare minimum, and we need to construct firewalls by monitoring, evaluating and guiding the process of ensuring it is eradicated and ensure the integrity in the system," Amina said.
This will be the second time that Kenya will renew the push to have doping offenders sent behind bars.
Former Cherangany Member of Parliament (MP) and athlete Wesley Korir, had introduced such a bill in Parliament but it was shot down.
Parliament later passed the Kenya Anti-Doping Act.
Asbel Kiprop, the 1,500m World champion and Olympic women’s marathon champion Jemima Sumgong are just some of the top Kenyan athletes currently serving various doping violations.
