DAILY POST: Bank Manager blames Safaricom for the facilitation of Dusit Terrorists-‘I was just taking instructions’

Friday, January 25, 2019- A bank
manager accused of facilitating the financing of Al-Shabaab terrorists who attacked the
Dusit D2 Complex in Riverside, Nairobi and killed 21 people has put Safaricom
on the spot.

Sophia Njoki Mbogo, a Diamond Trust Bank
Eastleigh Branch, is among suspects detained for 30 days to allow the
Anti-Terrorism Police Unit probe their role in the terror attack.
She is accused, as the branch boss, of allowing huge sums of
monies to be cashed within a very short time, without question.
One of the suspected financiers of the Dusit D2 attack, Mr
Hassan Abdi Nur, had registered 52 Mpesa agent accounts that he used to withdraw
large amounts of at Diamond Trust Bank Eastleigh Branch to fund the attack.
However, in her filed affidavit, Ms Mbogo, points an accusing
finger at Safaricom and stated that she has never dealt with any of the
terrorism suspects, personally or professionally.
She maintains that, the bank simply
serves as an agent of mobile communication service provider Safaricom to
release float according to the company’s instructions.
“I am an innocent bystander in this criminal inquiry and there
is no nexus between me and the other five terror suspects. And further, I am a
law-abiding citizen with no previous criminal record,” she said.
