  • A boat carrying 16 passengers has capsized in Lake Victoria, Homa Bay County, on Tuesday evening, September 21.

    Six passengers who were in the ill-fated boat have so far been rescued and rushed to the nearby hospital.

    At the time of publishing this story, rescue operations were still underway to save the remaining ten passengers. 

    Nyanza police boss Karanja Muiruri confirmed the incident stating that the rescue operation has been heightened to save the remaining.

    The boat was headed to Suba-North from Pier Beach at 6 pm when the accident occurred.

    In March, another boat capsized near Arongo beach in Seme Sub County of Kisumu County.

    The coxswain and one other person survived the incident and were rushed to Manywanda Hospital for treatment.

    Three bodies of those who drowned were retrieved by local divers and fishermen and moved to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) mortuary in Kisumu.

    The incident was confirmed by South West Seme location Assistant Chief Shadrach Ochola who stated the boat had eight passengers on board when it capsized.

    Apart from That, on August 15, three fishermen drowned after their boat capsized in the Indian Ocean along the coastline of Mpeketoni in Lamu County. Two survived the ordeal.
