Former Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel has been sentenced to one in jail over assault.

The vocal ODM politician was found guilty of slapping and kicking his successor Sarah Korere.

The incident reportedly happened at the office of former Interior Cabinet Secretary the late Joseph Nkaissery at Harambee House in Nairobi in 2016. Both were legislators although Korere was nominated at the time.

“Lempurkel willfully and unlawfully assaulted Sarah Korere by slapping her on the left cheek and kicked her on the lower abdomen thereby occasioning her actual bodily harm,” the charge sheet read.

Senior Resident Magistrate Hannah Onkwenu sent the former lawmaker to one year in prison without the option of fine. However, he can appeal at the High Court.

Lempurkel is a close ally of ODM leader Raila Odinga. He was among political leaders who attended the former Prime Minister’s forum of the Maa Community and pastoralists groups in Kajiado last month.
