Confederation of African Football (CAF) have confirmed the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) at the forthcoming 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

Speaking in Djibouti on Tuesday, April 30, president of CAF’s Referees Committee, Souleyman Waberi, confirmed this development despite recent criticisms over the use of VAR.

The technological innovation will be employed from the quarter finals during the continent’s football showpiece in Egypt as this summer.

“VAR at the forthcoming Cup of Nations in Egypt will begin from the quarter-finals of the competition,” Waberi added.

Interestingly, this will be the first experience of VAR in the continental tournament but not the first time it will be used in African football.

During the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco, VAR was put on trial from the quarter-final rounds and it was considered a huge success.

CAF eventually resolved to adopt the technology for the finals of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.

The 2019 AFCON will kick-off in Egypt from June 21 to July 19.

TUKO.co.ke reported that African football governing body CAF conducted the draws for the 2019 Nations Cup on Friday, April 12, in Egypt.

All the 24 countries at the 2019 African Cup of Nations now know their opponents as host Nation Egypt are in Group A and will face Uganda, DR Congo and Zimbabwe.

After 14 years of wait Kenya finally made a return to the quadrennial tournament.
