- David De Gea has expressed his desire to captain Manchester United next season
- The Spanish international is set to sign a new deal with the Red Devils
- Paul Pogba is one of the players tipped to skipper the club
David De Gea has revealed his desire to be appointed Manchester United captain ahead of the new Premier League season.
The Spaniard is on the verge of penning a new six-year-deal which will see him earn a sum of £375,000 a week at Old Trafford.
Having joined the Red Devils from Atletico Madrid in 2011, De Gea remains one of the most experienced players at the club.
And he wants to be rewarded with the leadership of the team when he kicks off his ninth season at the club in a matter of weeks.
De Gea's current deal will expire in the summer of 2020 and a new deal will commit him to the club for the next six seasons.
"I’ve been captain for some games. Of course it is amazing to be captain of a club like Manchester United and defend this badge," he said.
"It’s amazing, so of course I’ll be really, really happy to captain. It’s my ninth season and I feel like one of the most experienced players.
"I need to show that on the pitch and try to help the young guys know what Manchester United means and that’s important," he added.
The Spanish international also wants the club to return to winning ways having had to struggle for form in recent times.
Ashley Young was the captain of Man United last season and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is unsure who the leader of the team would be for next campaign.
Paul Pogba, who has been linked with a move away from old Trafford is also a leading candidate for the position.
