Eliud Kipchoge Nominated For Laureus World Sportsman of The Year Award

Olympic champion and world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge has been nominated for the 2022 Male Sportsman of the year in the Laureus World Sports Awards.

In a tweet, Kipchoge said that it’s an honour to be nominated alongside other world stars for the coveted award.

Kipchoge will battle it out with Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic, Dutch formula one world champion Max Verstappen, US swimmer Caeleb Dressel, Polish footballer Robert Lewandowski and American NFL superstar Tom Brady.

“I can say it’s an honour to be nominated for the Sports Personality of the Year Award 2021. Fantastic to be in the same list as great sportsmen like Tom Brady, Novak Djokovic, Caeleb Dressel, Robert Lewandowski and Max Verstappen. Thank you to all for your great support,” Kipchoge said.

In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Games, Kipchoge set a record, by becoming the third man to win gold back-to-back in the marathon. Others who previously retained their titles include Ethiopia’s Abebe Bikila (1960 and 1964) and former East German Waldemar Cierpinski (1976 and 1980).

The Laureus Sportsman awards are recognition of individual sportsmen for their achievements in the world of sports.

The award was established in 1999 by Laureus Sport for Good Foundation initiating patrons Daimler and Richemont. It is supported by its global partners Mercedes-Benz, IWC Schaffhausen and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group.
