A Kenyan student, Achieng Agutu, in the states is the breaking the Twittersphere after she appeared on American comedian Ellen Degeneres’ TV show.
Achieng was on the show as an audience member but she was surprised when she was called on stage.
This is after the show begins with Achieng dancing on set before the beginning of the show.
Achieng then tells Ellen,“I moved here (to the U.S) about five years ago for higher education and it’s been amazing but it’s also been really hard for my family back in Kenya because they’ve honestly done every single thing from selling land to taking loans to be able to pay my school fees and make sure that I’m comfortable.”
She added, “I work one full-time job, I’m an admissions counsellor at Holy Cross College, but then I babysit for two families; I wash people’s cars and clean their houses; I’m an Uber driver; I also teach English to international students.”

She then invites her on stage where she (Achieng) narrates how she learnt the English language by watching The Ellen Show as a young child.
Ellen then pretends to connect Achieng with her parents who are supposedly in Kenya and her brother in South Africa via video call before the signal goes down.
The host then pretends to head towards the video control room to fix the signal, only for Achieng’s parents and brother to emerge when the door opens.
The visibly excited family are then given a chance to play a game where they are required to pick one card from a group of three – labeled 1,2,3 – with different figures inscribed at the back.
Fortunately, they select the card labeled 2 which comes bearing the highest amount out of the three; a whopping $50,000 (Ksh.5,000,000).
Check out the video below
Achieng is in my audience, and hasn’t seen her family in 2 years, since they’re in Kenya and South Africa… which is weird, because I’m pretty sure I have some people from Kenya and South Africa backstage. pic.twitter.com/Sa4L0xMby8

KOT reacted to the interview. Here are some of their thoughts.
In the interview Achieng talks about her parents selling land, taking loans and borrowing cash to educate her…but later she mentions how they are also giving back to the society because they are truly blessed and that they are educating 10 plus kids… pic.twitter.com/EroTRsFQcZ

The Luo council of Elders has summoned the father, one Mr. Agutu, to explain why daughter, Achieng', saw it fit to embarrass n demean the ancestors, who are now angry, by claiming that she learned English by watching @TheEllenShow yet English language is a default setting in Luos
